The Story of Rich Boyd, Page 4

(continued from page 3)

He apparently liked Rich’s article and renderings on Future Rods. Shortly thereafter, Geoff hired him to write about and photograph street rods. Writing wasn’t something Rich felt confident about, but Geoff offered a piece of advice he’s never forgotten, “An important ingredient when writing about cars is enthusiasm!”

“Working on the staff of a car magazine was a dream come true!” and kept Rich plenty busy for the next four years. “Toward the end of my four years at SRM, I learned about a by-product of too much fun — burnout! There were endless weekends of events while my young kids were playing baseball and performing in school plays without dad attending.” Again Rich sailed on to new horizons.

Four more years passed while Rich either taught school or worked in a Long Beach advertising agency as a product information specialist. Then, after a meeting with Rod & Custom Editor Jeff Tann, (and after recovering from magazine burnout), the two hit it off, and he found himself happily back in the one profession that had been the greatest fun and most satisfying: magazine journalist. Working for R&C was another dream come true. Rich says, “As long as I’m photographing ’em, writing about ’em, drawing and driving ’em, I’m a happy guy. You can say I’m a fully saturated car nut. I must have inherited it from my dad, and I hope to pass it along to my children, so they might enjoy and appreciate our rich automotive heritage.”
